New initiative launched against federal contraception rules

- A new “Protect Our Conscience” campaign has been launched to help Catholic
individuals, families, and parishes voice their opposition to the
newly-confirmed federal contraception coverage mandate. Matt Smith, president of Catholic Advocate, announced in a statement that
his goal was “to have at least 100,000 faithful Catholics participate each
month until Congress acts” to protect the rights of institutions that could
be forced to cover contraception and sterilization for their employees.
Vatican corruption charges ‘well beyond reality’

News) - The official Vatican spokesman says an Italian television
broadcast claiming to disclose financial corruption at the Vatican
exaggerated the situation. Fr. Federico Lombardi, S.J., questioned the “debatable” journalistic
methods employed in the broadcast’s “diffusion of private documents.”
UK church leaders stress unity as secularism spreads

- Catholic and Coptic Orthodox leaders in the U.K. are encouraging unity
between the two churches as society grows increasingly hostile to religion. “We're facing serious threats of increased secularism and marginalization
of religion in general and Christianity in particular,” said Coptic Orthodox

Washington archbishop testifies against state's 'gay marriage' bill

- A Washington state bill that would recognize same-sex “marriage” poses a
“grave challenge” to the common good, Archbishop of Seattle J. Peter Sartain
warned. The principles of marriage are “built into human life itself,” he told
the state Senate’s Government Operations, Tribal Relations & Elections
Committee on Jan. 23.

After Benin visit, Pope sees Africa as 'resevoir of life' for the Church

News) - Pope Benedict said Nov. 23 that during his trip to the country
of Benin this past weekend he saw that Africa is “a reservoir of life and
vitality” for the Church and its future. In keeping with tradition, the Pope offered his assessment of the Nov.
18-20 visit to Benin at today’s general audience, which was held in the
Vatican’s Paul VI Hall because of a winter rain storm.

take center stage at an international conference for health care workers
that begins Nov. 24 in Rome. “We really hope this great Pope – great in life, great in suffering,

Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski, president of the Pontifical Council for Health
Care Workers, in remarks to CNA.
