Georg Ratzinger, was once director.

China to permit limited Bible distribution at Olympics

Beijing, 27th June 2008 (CNA) - The Chinese government has said it will permit booklets of the Gospels, New Testaments, and full Bibles to be distributed during the Olympic Games, even though it normally controls publication of the Bible. The Bible Society, a British-based Christian charity, has confirmed that 50,000 bilingual booklets containing the four Gospels will made available in the Athletes’ Village in Beijing and five other Olympic Cities. Additionally, 10,000 New Testaments and 30,000 Bibles will be printed, the Times Online says.

In his homily, the Pope encouraged to look at the Eucharist as a “mystery of alliance” and not a “meal among friends.”  He also announced that the next International Eucharistic Congress will take place in 2012 in Dublin, Ireland.

Rome, 6th June 2008 (CNA) - In an interview with the magazine “Maria Mensajera,” famous Italian exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth said, “Everybody is vulnerable to the work of Satan” and that “the devil loves to take over those who hold political office.” The Spanish daily “La Razon” published the interview in an article by Alexander Smoltczyk in which the 82 year-old priest describes what happens in an exorcism.  He said he has performed more than 70,000.

As he pondered what makes St. Gregory the Great truly deserving of his title, the Holy Father said that his humility is the true measure of his greatness. Today's general audience marks the second week in a row that the Pope has devoted his address to Gregory the Great. The Holy Father devoted his remarks today to the saint's literary legacy and his goal of constantly presenting the Church's teaching on the ways that lead to the contemplation of God.

Police threaten Christians for preaching in Muslim communities in Britain

London, 4th June 2008 (CNA) - British police said they will not apologize to two Christian preachers who were threatened with arrest by a Muslim police officer for preaching Christianity in Muslim communities in the city of Birmingham. According to the Telegraph, the incident occurred last February when Christian ministers Arthur Cunningham and Joseph Abraham were handing out leaflets and speaking with four Muslim youths about Christianity in Birmingham.

Glasgow, 4th June 2008 (CNA) - On Wednesday Cardinal Keith O’Brien, Archbishop of Glasgow, spoke with members of Parliament at a reception at the Scotland Office.  In his remarks, he defended the coherence of the Catholic pro-life stand and discussed the proper role of the Church in political debate.

Liberals in Belgium propose euthanasia for children and persons with dementia

Madrid, 2nd June 2008 (CNA) - The Liberal Party in Belgium has put forth a measure that would expand the country’s euthanasia law passed in 2002 to allow it to be applied to children and persons with dementia. The Spanish online daily Hoy reported that current law in Belgium permits euthanasia “only for adults and in specific circumstances: terminal pathologies or illnesses that cause severe pain or suffering.  Belgium was the second country in Europe behind Holland to approve the practice.”

Textbook for 15 year-olds in Spain attacks the Church

Madrid, 1st June 2008 (CNA) - The association Educacion y Persona has denounced a new textbook that aggressively attacks the Church and supports abortion and is part of the government-sponsored school course Education for Citizenship. The textbook will be used by 15 year-olds.

Cardinal Comastri, who is the archpriest of the papal basilica of St. Peter's in the Vatican, presented the results of the recently-completed restoration of the Valerii Mausoleum at a press conference this morning.

German radio documentary says exorcisms are being outsourced

Berlin, 25th May 2008 (CNA) - A radio documentary reporting that hundreds of Germans believe themselves to be possessed by demons has drawn attention to the status of exorcism in the Catholic Church and the lack of exorcists in Germany. The Times Online explains that the state-run radio network WDR’s report on exorcism in Germany has sparked the renewed interest . The radio piece consists of interviews with several exorcists and extracts from several exorcisms that the network received permission to record.

Padre Pio shrine could top Lourdes in visitors

Rome, 8th May 2008 (CNA) - An Italian business magazine is claiming that the shrine dedicated to St. Padre Pio has become a bigger attraction than Lourdes, now that the saint’s body has been put on display. ANSA reports that Economy magazine says the number of annual visitors to the southern town of San Giovanni Rotondo will increase to nine million.  The projected total will make the town the world’s second most popular destination for religious tourists, behind only the Vatican.

Cardinal Trujillo Dies

Archbishop Gomez said he was “pleasantly surprised that Pope Benedict XVI included a paragraph in Spanish in the message he sent ahead of his visit to the United States,” and said he hoped the Pontiff would mention the issue of immigration during his stay in Washington and New York.

Official data shows 13,000 baptized in China during Easter Vigil

Rome, 11th April 2008 (CNA) - The Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples reports that during the Easter Vigil over 13,000 people were baptized in China. The Fides news agency reports that in the 80 dioceses of continental China, “13,608 people were baptized in the Easter Vigil 2008. In addition to the Sacrament of Baptism, the catechumens also received the other two sacraments of initiation: Confirmation and the Holy Eucharist.”

Europe should look to St. Benedict for model of renewal

Vatican City, 9th April 2008 (CNA) - Pope Benedict XVI held the last general audience today ahead of next week’s papal trip to the United States, urging a renewal of the Christian faith in Europe. With Easter celebrations subsiding, Pope Benedict returned to his teachings on the lives of the Early Fathers of the Church this Wednesday, as he greeted 20,000 visitors and pilgrims in an overcast St. Peter's Square.

Church moves to allay fears over prayer for Jews

Pope on Ash Wednesday: prayer is “engine of the world”

New York museum organizes art expo on the prodigal son

The Art of Forgiveness,” has been opened at the Biblical Art Museum of New York and will be open to the general public until February 17. According to the L’Osservatore Romano, the purpose of the exhibit is to showcase artwork inspired by this parable which speaks of God’s forgiveness towards those who are truly repentant, from the Renaissance to today.

This new prayer, which is to be used this Lent, is a simple prayer for the Jewish people, that they may discover the salvation brought by Jesus. The previous version was regarded as offensive by some Jewish organizations.

Italian priest calls on athletes to stop blaspheming

Rome, 2nd February 2008 (CNA) - Father Nicoló Anselmi, director of Youth Ministry for the Bishops’ Conference of Italy, has called on professional soccer players looked up to by thousands of young people to stop blaspheming during games. “Players, please, stop blaspheming when something goes wrong on the field.  You are offending and irritating us instead of making us have fun,” Father Anselmi said after news programs repeatedly showed a famous player clearly utter a blasphemy during a game on Saturday after a call by the referee in favor of the other team.

Runaway archbishop publishes autobiography

Before a crowd of some one hundred journalists and cameramen, Archbishop Milingo launched his book in a bookshop near the Trevi fountain in Rome.

Spaniard Adolfo Nicolás elected new Superior General of the Jesuits

Rome, 19th January 2008 (CNA) - Pope Benedict XVI gave his consent on Saturday to the election of the Spanish Jesuit Adolfo Nicolás as the new Superior General of the Society of Jesus. The 217 delegates gathered since January 7 for the 35th General Congregation, chose Fr. Nicolás in the second round of voting. Nicolás hails from Palencia (Spain) and was born on April 29, 1936.

The students who were protesting his presence claimed that he had nothing to say to a secular institution, and yet, his speech was on that very topic. Spanish Socialist leader asks Pope to give explanation of the family

Padre Pio relatives protest saint’s exhumation

Rome,  8th January 2008 (CNA) - Relatives are strongly opposing the planned exhumation and display of the body of St. Padre Pio, the twentieth-century Italian priest renowned for his stigmata and preternatural powers. Saint Pio’s niece, Pia Forgione, and her eight children have begun legal action to stop the exhumation of the saint’s body, which is planned to be displayed later this year for pilgrims to venerate, according to ANSA.  The family’s lawyer, Francesco Traversi, who also heads an association of Padre Pio devotees, said they were trying to prevent the saint’s body from being “profaned.”
