The Way of the Cross |
|
The Way of the Cross is not a work of
erudition. It is essentially a devotional exercise, a means which men and
women can use to make contact with God, to adore Him, to thank Him, to
increase their love for Him. Devotion to the sufferings of Christ, is
particularly recommended for all who wish to live "upon the model of that
charity which Christ showed to us when he gave himself up on our behalf"
(Eph 6,2).

"Via Dolorosa" or "Via Crucis" designates a
stretch of road between the Antonia fortress and Golgotha, along which Jesus
Christ walked bowed under the weight of the Cross. The name dates from the
sixteenth century, although the custom of retracing Jesus' steps to Golgotha
began in the early centuries of Christianity. According to the most common
tradition the Antonia fortress and the Praetorium nearby were the sites
where Jesus was brought before Pilate. The fortress, which stood near the
north-west corner of the Jewish Temple, was the starting point for Jesus'
painful walk toward Calvary, which at that time was outside the city walls.

The First Station
Jesus is condemned to death

Pilate called together the
chief priests, the rulers and the people, and said to
them, "You brought me this man as one who was inciting
the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your
presence and have found no basis for your charges
against him. Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to
us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve
death. Therefore, I will punish him and then release
him."
With one voice they cried
out, "Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!"
(Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an
insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
Wanting to release Jesus,
Pilate appealed to them again. But they kept shouting,
"Crucify him! Crucify him!"
For the third time he
spoke to them: "Why? What crime has this man committed?
I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty.
Therefore I will have him punished and then release
him." (Lk 23, 13-22)
From then on, Pilate tried
to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, "If you
let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who
claims to be a king opposes Caesar."
When Pilate heard this, he
brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge's seat at a
place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is
Gabbatha). It was the day of Preparation of Passover
Week, about the sixth hour.
"Here is your king,"
Pilate said to the Jews. But they shouted, "Take him
away! Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your
king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the
chief priests answered.
Finally Pilate handed him
over to them to be crucified.(Jn 19, 12-16)

The Second Station
Jesus carries the Cross

Then he said to them all: "If
anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up
his cross daily and follow me. (Lk 9, 23).
So the soldiers took charge of
Jesus. Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of
the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). (Jn 19, 17)

The Third Station
Jesus falls the first time

But he was pierced for our
transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment
that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
(Is 53, 5).
Because of your wrath there is no
health in my body; my bones have no soundness because of my sin.
My back is filled with searing pain; there is no health in my body.
My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds; my
neighbors stay far away. Those who seek my life set their traps,
those who would harm me talk of my ruin; all day long they plot
deception. (Ps 38, 3, 7, 11-12).

The Forth Station
Jesus meets his mother

Then Simeon blessed them and said to
Mary, his mother: "This child is destined to cause the falling and
rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken
against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a
sword will pierce your own soul too." (Lk 2, 34-35)
"Is it nothing to you, all you who
pass by? Look around and see. Is any suffering like my suffering
that was inflicted on me, that the Lord brought on me in the day of
his fierce anger? (Lam 1, 12)
What can I say for you? With what can
I compare you, O Daughter of Jerusalem? To what can I liken you,
that I may comfort you, O Virgin Daughter of Zion? Your wound is as
deep as the sea. Who can heal you? (Lam 2, 13)

The Fifth Station
Simon the Cyrenean helps Jesus carry the
Cross

As they were going out, they met a man
from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.(Mt 27,
32).
Anyone who loves his father or mother more
than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more
than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and
follows me is not worthy of me. (Mt 10, 37-38)
Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should
restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.
Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of
Christ.(Gal 6, 1-2)

The Sixth Station
Veronica wipes the face of Jesus

My heart says of you, "Seek his face!"
Your face, Lord, I will seek.
Do not hide your face from me, do not
turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not
reject me or forsake me, O God my Savior. (Ps 27, 8-9).
Just as there were many who were
appalled at him - his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of
any man and his form marred beyond human likeness. (Is 52, 14; 2-3)

The Seventh Station
Jesus falls the second time

We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he
did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and
as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his
mouth. (Iz 53, 6-7)
I sink in the miry depths, where there
is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf
me.
I am worn out calling for help; my
throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.
Those who hate me without reason
outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause,
those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not
steal.
You know my folly, O God; my guilt is
not hidden from you.
May those who hope in you not be
disgraced because of me, O Lord, the Lord Almighty; may those who
seek you not be put to shame because of me, O God of Israel.
For I endure scorn for your sake, and
shame covers my face.
I am a stranger to my brothers, an
alien to my own mother's sons; (Ps 69, 2-8)

The Eighth Station
Jesus meets the women of
Jerusalem

A large number of people
followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for
him. Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem,
do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your
children. For the time will come when you will say, 'Blessed
are the barren women, the wombs that never bore and the
breasts that never nursed!' Then " 'they will say to the
mountains, "Fall on us!" and to the hills, "Cover us!" '.
For if men do these things when the tree is green, what will
happen when it is dry?"
Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him
to be executed. (Lk 23, 27-32)

The Nineth Station
Jesus falls the third time

But when I stumbled, they
gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I
was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing.
Like the ungodly they
maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me. (Ps
35, 15-16)
We who are strong ought to
bear with the failings of the weak and not to please
ourselves. Each of us should please his neighbor for his
good, to build him up. For even Christ did not please
himself but, as it is written: "The insults of those who
insult you have fallen on me." (Rim 15, 1-3)

The Tenth Station
Jesus is stripped off His garments

When the soldiers
crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing
them into four shares, one for each of them, with
the undergarment remaining. This garment was
seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
"Let's not tear it,"
they said to one another. "Let's decide by lot who
will get it."
This happened that the
scripture might be fulfilled which said, "They
divided my garments among them and cast lots for my
clothing." So this is what the soldiers did. (Jn 19,
23-24)

The Eleventh Station
Jesus is nailed to the Cross

When they came to the place called the
Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals - one on
his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, "Father, forgive them,
for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his
clothes by casting lots.
Above his head they placed the written charge against him: THIS IS
JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS. (Mt 27, 37).
Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and
saying, "So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in
three days, come down from the cross and save yourself!"
In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law
mocked him among themselves. "He saved others," they said, "but he
can't save himself! Let this Christ, this King of Israel, come down
now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Those crucified
with him also heaped insults on him.
At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth
hour. (Mk 15, 29-33).

The Twelveth Station
Jesus dies on the Cross

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out
in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" - which means, "My
God, my God, why have you forsaken me?". (Mk 15, 34)
It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole
land until the ninth hour, for the sun stopped shining. And the
curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud
voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had
said this, he breathed his last.
The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said,
"Surely this was a righteous man." (Lk 23, 44-47)
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were
still sinners, Christ died for us.
Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall
we be saved from God's wrath through him! (Rim 5, 8-9)

The Thirteenth Station
Jesus is taken down from the Cross

My heart says of you, "Seek his face!"
Your face, Lord, I will seek.
Do not hide your face from me, do not
turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not
reject me or forsake me, O God my Savior. (Ps 27, 8-9).

any man and his form marred beyond human likeness (Is 52, 14; 2-3)

The Fourteenth Station
Jesus is laid in the tomb

Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a
clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut
out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to
the tomb and went away. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were
sitting there opposite the tomb. (Mt 27, 59-61)
So they went and made the tomb secure
by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard. (Mt 27, 66
